Local residents have been stunned to learn that a completely broken looking man isn’t actually homeless, he’s just at his wit’s end from fifteen years of marriage.
The dishevelled, bearded gentleman can often be seen wandering the streets in a daze or sat on a park bench, anything to get out of the house.
‘He looks a right state so we all just assumed he was homeless. Then we found out he was Tracy’s husband, I remember her from school and she was a bossy boots then so it does add up,’ said Emma Stockley.
The broken man, whose real name is actually Tom Watford, makes for such a convincing homeless man that some local citizens actually gave him money.
‘I saw asleep on a park bench with his hat next to him. I gave him a quid. At the time I was hoping he’d spend it on food. Knowing what I know now, I hope he put it towards a pint,’ said Derek Billing.
There is now a town-wide appeal to help Tom and other men of his kind.
‘We don’t know how many Tom’s are out there. Men whose lives are being made miserable by their henpecking wives. It’s a real problem and that’s why we’re going to have a Broken Man Awareness Month in October. We’re not actually going to do anything, just say that we’re aware of the problem. That’s the best we can do with the constant government cutbacks,’ said Patricia Peters, a town councillor.
